each area has its own set of chests, for example krytan chests in kryta, maguuma chests in the maguuma jungle, and you need a corresponding key to open it. They can spawn anywhere, but usually around a set area

Mind that usually the chests' loot is worth less than how much you spend on the key. I reccomend only going for chests if you buy the keys extra cheap, get the keys off enemy drops, or just want to gamble and try your luck. The most practical keys that often yield items more valuable than the keys' cost are Obsidian Keys (FoW) and Phantom Keys (UW/new UW).
Ascalonian Key - Ascalonian Chest Steel Key - Steel Chest Krytan Key - Krytan Chest Maguuma Key - Maguuma Chest Elonian Key - Elonian Chest Shiverpeak Key - Shiverpeak Chest Miner's Key - Miner's Chest Darkstone Key - Darkstone Chest Phantom Key - Phantom Chest Obsidian Key - Obsidian Chest Basically the keys match up with their self-explanatory-named chest counterparts. Shouldn't be too hard to remember that. |

and to add to eldin's post, the ones with less obvious names are found in these areas:
Steel = North Shiverpeaks Elonian = Crystal Desert Miners = Sorrows Furnace Darkstone = Fire Islands |
